WOTTS - LITTLE BUG

Wotts, an indie-pop group based out of Ottawa, Canada, released their latest single “Little Bug” last month. From start to finish, the song holds all that is loved about indie pop tracks - it’s catchy and easy to listen to, but also has this unique emo understone that gives a bit of a nostalgic sound to the early 2000s. As the third single from their upcoming EP COPE, the track continues to showcase the band’s reflective vibe as well and their thoughtful and creative songwriting.

Focusing on the song’s message, “Little Bug” begins with lyrics that immediately catch your attention: “Little bug it’s time to wake. There’s so much new to see today. Light in the morning. Look around, take a breath. You know they wanna see your face.” These lyrics set the tone for the songwriting that will follow. Perhaps drawing some memories from childhood stories, these lyrics hint at a deeper message about guiding someone through their day, and also through their life. And this is probably very intentional and comes full circle. By the end of the song, that story concludes in a way with the closing lines: now we got rest though, I’ll be here, I’ll be here, I’ll hold you to the light. These lyrics might be overlooked on first listen, but when completing a closer analysis of the song it shows that Wotts chose a simple but powerful way to end “Little Bug”

“Little Bug” blends indie pop melodies with that classic hazy production, thanks to a bit of muffled instrumentation. Soft keys and those subtly warped guitars create a backing track that fully surrounds the edgy vocals through every part. The influence of artists like Slowdive can be heard in those iconic blurred textures, while the psychedelic tones might bring to mind the melodic style of Tame Impala, who is also cited as an inspiration.

All in all, what makes “Little Bug” stand out is its storytelling, vivid lyrics and ambient production. The track has this unique, powerful emotional tone, but it also is comforting at times, thanks to its thoughtful songwriting and full narrative. It surely keeps us looking forward to the release of Wott’s EP COPE.
