On Rotation: TRUST TATE "CITY NEVER SLEEP"
Trust Tate, a Jersey City native DJ now based in North Dakota, makes a statement with his latest single, “City Never Sleep,” which blends visual storytelling with an energetic production. The track is a personal one for Tate as it’s all about his background growing up in tough environments to finding success and purpose in music. Entirely self-recorded and produced in his studio, “City Never Sleep” shows that hard work and passion can result in the best of tracks.
Focusing on the production, the song’s sound is a mix of hard-hitting beats and atmospheric vocals and melodies. However, Tate’s delivery is sharp, following a strong rhythm with a style that might bring to mind top artists like A$AP Rocky, Kendrick Lamar, and Drake. As the track goes on, it comes with more energy, perfectly bringing to mind the title of a late night in a city.
Lyrically, Tate might also bring to mind artists like A$AP Rocky, Kendrick Lamar, and Drake as “City Never Sleep” is all about self-reflection. Like his inspirations, the song gives a not-so subtle shout out to the haters, as well as the ones that stood the test of time. For example, in some of the track’s opening lines, Tate sings “Yeah I’m with the gang and we 30 deep” and later he sings “Every compliment you gave me was underhanded”. These two contradicting lyrics show his reflection on friendship, loyalty, and self-preservation. Other lines, such as “To my day 1s I won’t ever swish” and “Say you love me, stop” give more insight into his background and relationships, as well as focus on how we grapple with our sense of identity and where we come from.
All in all, Tate’s ability to mix his own personal story with a clean and polished production makes “City Never Sleep” a release that is bound to give him some attention. However, it should come as no surprise as Tate has been working in music for years. With his background in DJing and production, as well as his hands-on approach to crafting his sound, Tate is carving out his own path out in North Dakota.
