TALL POPPIES

Interesting fusions present themselves all the time in underground music. As artists look to develop an original sound in order to break out into the mainstream, all sorts of interesting combinations of genre, instrumentation and vocals can entice listeners to check out a fresh new talent. What about an indie band that incorporates disco and the sounds of the Bee Gees into their music? Look no further than the latest single from UK indie-pop group Tall Poppies, “World Keeps Spinning.” With drums that sound frenetic like the Studio 54 groups that the band attempts to emulate and violin parts that come straight out of the 70s, the group attempts to fuse these sounds with indie legends like The Smiths and other guitar-driven bands from the same scene. There’s a kind of openness that introduces the song, a mystery laid out before the driving rhythm kicks in and we’re treated to a half-Bee-Gees half-Scissor-Sisters vocal style that acts as the perfect final piece to the song.

With lyrics that feature pleas to listeners to be resilient and overcome their problems in the face of an always-moving world, Tall Poppies and “World Keeps Spinning” are an excellent and inventive fusion of indie-pop and disco that might just be the shift the genre has been waiting for for so long.
