SPACE MEMORY EFFECT - BLUE
Space Memory Effect, the artist name of Snoqualmie-based indie artist Amy Wallace, released her latest single “Blue,” the first single in her upcoming album From Here I Dream. Co-written with Canadian musician and producer Trevor Lewington, “Blue” showcases the beginning of a collaboration that first started in 2019 and continues to share her sound today. It’s a song that focuses on emotional clarity and carries a retro-leaning production style while also blending synth-driven pop with a 90s alt-rock edge.
Though years passed between its first demo and final recording, “Blue” maintains its creative spark in its production. You can hear it also in the songwriting - there are moments of frustration, reflection, and self-recognition that must mean something bigger. The song’s indie-pop sound is softened by the intimate vibe of its arrangement, which features keys, synth textures, bass, and guitar strums that accentuate Amy’s voice. Put simply, the production gives the track a familiar sound that is bound to make you a bit nostalgic. Afterall, “Blue” leans into its influences of the past while keeping a clean production. The synths feel lifted from 90s pop-rock, while the careful layering of keys and vocals keep the song moving with clear structure.
Lyrically, the song carries loads of meaning with a gentle vocal performance. When Amy sings, “my heart cast blue / my hands cast blue / I know what was said / I know what we do / it’s too late to change,” in the second first, it showcase that repetition of the word “blue,” which is key in the chorus becomes the centerpiece of the song. Much like today’s pop writers, the repeated phrasing further focuses on the emotion behind the “blue,” giving the title a meaningful pull.
All in all, “Blue” was worth the wait for its release. It’s the first track Amy and Trevor wrote together, and now, years later, it is the first taste of a multi-course meal of releases. For listeners who are already fans of today’s thoughtful indie-pop, 90s sound, and lyrics that have meaning, Space Memory Effect’s “Blue” is a beautifully written track to add to your playlist.
