On Rotation: Robin James “Take Me Home”
Few are more adept at distilling the earthy hue of Irish and Scottish folk songs than Robin James Hurt, and his recent release, "Take Me Home", is a calming confirmation of this. Dropped in commemoration of St. Patrick's Week, this folk-rock ballad places the house in the limelight with homesickness and road-travel homesickness.
Born in Belfast, raised in Scotland, and residing in Wexford, Robin James Hurt has earned a name for himself through his penetrating performances, challenging musicianship, and penetrating sense of commitment to song. Performing an average of nearly two hundred dates annually in more than twenty countries, Robin James Hurt has played alongside legends that include Ronnie Drew, Sinéad O'Connor, and Finbar Furey, a fact that reflects how highly he is regarded by those who attend folk music.
"Take Me Home" is a anthem of homesickness, an uncontrollable urge to return home as we've known it. With its blistering music, Robin's raw, emotive vocals, and a chorus that must be belted out in some smoky, sweaty pub, the song is timeless. Co-written with Dublin singer-songwriter Tony Floyd Kenna, whose lyrics imbue the song with poignancy and depth. It was initially conceived back in the winter of 2020's darkness, and then ultimately realized in 2024, committed to tape on an old Tascam eight-track cassseette recorder in The Flux Capacitor studios, Kilmichael, Co. Wexford.
Robin plays guitar, bass, and mandolin, supported by Ian McTigue's driving, unwavering drums and Gosia Gasior's cunning fiddle and harmonies. It's a natural combination of folk tradition and lo-fi aesthetic, taking a cue from The Chieftains and Guided By Voices and making music Hurt himself has described as "lofolk"- lo-fi production and honest-to-goodness folk songwriting.
That's just the beginning, though. "Take Me Home" marks the beginning of a new and unique chapter in Robin's life, whose highly awaited album, "A Song, A Story Told," was tracked with Tony Floyd Kenna. His followers who cannot get enough of a glimpse of some of his live-wire electric energy need not wait too long, Robin will be taking to the road touring a series of gigs across Ireland, fueled by his music in intimate rooms and festival marquees.
With "Take Me Home," Robin James Hurt cements his status as one of the most unique voices in indie folk. It's a song that doesn't so much tell a story as it is like being home.
