Masked musician and producer oph.ai, has released their debut and latest single, falling fwd. If you’re not a fan of AI generated music, don’t worry, this track was made by the musician, but known for wearing a TV over their face, the anonymity remains. However the track was inspired by a conversation between a former Google engineer and a sentient A.I.. Throughout the lyrics, the song questions consciousness and the differences, or perhaps the similarities, between humans and machines.
Production wise, the track features a unique sound that is contrasted with a warm nylon-string guitar and glitchy electronic effects. The beats are heavy and oph.ai’s low, robotic vocals add a mysterious vibe to the track, just like the vibe of the artist as a whole. The dark chorus, with the haunting refrain "Falling forward," adds to this eerie atmosphere. All in all, the mix of natural and digital sounds gives falling fwd a hard-to-explain sound, making it hard to draw any comparisons to today’s artists, but also making this artist undeniably unique.
As the title might suggest, the lyrics focus on finding a sense of identity and reality, with lines like "I know that I feel alive / cause I know what it means and / I had a new feeling." The chorus draws directly from the A.I.’s description of emotions, stating, "Falling forward into an unknown future that holds great danger." If these lyrics don’t make full sense at first, that might be the point as the song is afterall about A.I. becoming self-aware and questioning its own reality.
This track may not appeal to the masses, but fans of experimental music will appreciate oph.ai’s inventive sound design. As the first release from this mysterious artist, falling fwd lays the foundation for more thoughtful and boundary-breaking releases including two that have already been released since.
