On Rotation: MAT HOOK - Runaway Road

For Mat Hook, ‘Runaway Road’ represents a return. You see, the Sheffield-based musician took an artistic hiatus lasting the best part of seven years, until the pandemic brought some perspective and pushed him to get back to it. Previously part of indie band ‘Kartica’, Mat Hook now champions a solo project, delving into brit-pop and indie-flavoured territories with a single that’s hard to resist.

‘Runaway Road’ shares a certain melancholic and nostalgic vibe, while taking an introspective approach to its authors’ life. As Hook explains: “It was written at the end of a tough period in my life with job losses, births, breakups and deaths and is sung reflectively about that time.”

It’s great to see Mat coming back to his true calling - you know, art makes everything and everyone better. ‘Runaway Road’ showcases his malleable and evocative vocals, capable of delivering anthemic choruses or fragile and intimate verses; overall, Hook's songwriting is quite fitting his sonic characteristics, a sign that he’s confident in his abilities.
