MARDI TICKLE - Mennyt on valmis

The disco revival that had its peak in the late-2010s and early-2020s was (and still continues to be) one of the most refreshing movements in recent pop memory. Finally divorced from the dark, moody pop that artists emulating trailblazers such as Lorde were pumping out during the mid-2010s, pop music became fun again with sparkly rhythms and big hooks. Mardi Tickle has seemed to take note of such sounds in the pop sphere (she even labels her own work as a “glitter firework of soul and glam rock”), and with her latest single, “Mennyt on valmis”, she succeeds in creating an absolute gem of a disco-pop banger. Although sung in Tickle’s native language of Finnish, the overwhelming bounce and innocent fun of the track make the language barrier irrelevant in this case.

With major influences in artists as diverse as Jamiroquai and Scissor Sisters, Tickle is seeking to take pop in interesting yet still danceable directions. For instance, the key change in the chorus may initially be jarring to some first-time listeners, but the shift in mood adds much to the anthemic nature of the song. This leans away from some of the slower, smoother disco pop of artists like Dua Lipa or Bruno Mars and closer to the high energy sounds of artists like Lady Gaga. Loud, proud, and booming with charisma, “Mennyt on valmis” is a sure success for Mardi Tickle to close out the year.
