LUAN LUAN - Nonsense

‘‘Nonsense’’ is solid and energetic and raises many questions by confronting the blindness of being in a toxic relationship.

On rotation: Luan Luan- Nonsense

Luan Luan, a Madrid-born and Brighton-based indie pop artist, has released their latest track “Nonsense,” which is the first single from their upcoming debut EP. After taking a bit of a break since their 2020 release “Yellow,” “Nonsense” uses every verse and chorus to tell a story of an unhealthy love and eventually finding the strength to speak about it.

It might not sound as heavy of a track at first. Afterall, sound-wise, “Nonsense” is energetic and iconically upbeat. It blends the perfect amount of catchy indie-pop rhythms with a classic full-band instrumentation, guitar lines, and an ear-catching saxophone solo, which is actually the first time Luan includes sax in their music. Like many of today’s best indie pop releases, the production is raw at times, but also polished enough for headphones listeners.

Lyrically, “Nonsense” opens with some poetic songwriting imagery: “It was a winter evening when I saw your face / Changing through all the seasons, I couldn’t pretend.” Furthermore, the chorus, in contrast, asks questions, “Are you gonna sing that song? Be that wrong? Are you gonna let it through the night?” showing a deeper layer to the reflection of verbal harm. The bridge perfectly brings a moment of clarity, with “They’re fading away all these feelings, don’t you see it?” Overall, it’s the perfect cocktail of songwriting, using imagery, poetic devices, and also personal storytelling.

In the indie-pop space, Luan Luan music and latest release will likely be a favorite to fans of artists like Clairo, Beabadoobee, or Julien Baker, who also mix songwriting storytelling with a unique musical vibe. “Nonsense” is a promising start to the EP and a sing that Luan is actually very no nonsense when it comes to their evolving artist career.
