On Rotation: LILO - APRIL SHOWERS
Lilo, a rising Boston-based indie folk artist, shared her latest single titled “April Showers.” Behind the springy name is a poetic track that is all about emotional healing and the process of letting go. With its thoughtful lyrics, rain-soaked intro, and calming acoustic sound,“April Showers” shows that Lilo is making the most of her Berklee College of Music degree.
Lyrically, the song is rich with metaphorical nuance. One of the standout lyrics in the chorus is, “Look at our reflection / skin sown on a fairy / her reactions tailored / too small to feel safety....” captures the feeling of losing identity while trying to appear gentle, but in the end, there is just a feeling of disconnectedness. Maybe even it’s about being molded into something beautiful on the outside while feeling invisible inside. This lyric, like all parts of the song, captures the contradiction of trying to keep it together while actually falling apart.
Production-wise, “April Showers” is a clean pop folk track but also with some unique jazz-influenced touches, including brushed drums, acoustic plucking, and field recordings that create a layered backing. Her vocal delivery is airy, offering a peaceful sound that makes the lyrics easy to understand. The minimal instrumentation leaves space for this and also makes the song perfect for fans of Phoebe Bridgers, Laufey, and Beabadoobee.
With “April Showers,” Lilo continues to show her strength as both a singer and songwriter. As her audience is bound to continue to grow (afterall, April showers bring May flowers), it’s clear her blend of thoughtful lyrics with a relaxing production will set her apart from other artists.
