On Rotation: Larry Karlenko’s "The Horizon"
Larry Karlenko, a Southern California-based composer and producer, released his latest single “The Horizon”, a unique track that blends spoken word, gospel-inspired bits, and a mix textures into a song that is more like a meditation. The track is filled with historical reference and philosophical reflection, but staying true to Karlenko’s signature mix of electronic and human sounds.
Lyrically, “The Horizon” is simple, yet powerful. The repetition of the word “Freedom” is found throughout all parts of the song. For example, it bookends pivotal passages. One reads, “Please release the chains that bind / Freedom is just on the horizon.” This section highlights the spiritual nature of the song. This is further shown in the lyrics, “Because of freedom we have choices / It’s easy to write your wishes on a sign / But the hard work is asking for help.” This lyric echoes the song’s message that freedom is not a right, but a responsibility. Overall, the lyrics paint the picture of today’s society, where individualism and community are often at odds.
Karlenko credits his friend Nesco Lettsome as a major inspiration behind the song. Lettsome, whose voice is showcased in the song, recorded a Bible verse and offered commentary. It was actually his idea to center the piece around the concept of “choice,” which helped expand the song’s message.
Production-wise, “The Horizon” is one of a kind from the start with the sound of a nostalgic crackle of a vinyl record. If you listen carefully, you will hear that this sound then slowly transitions from mono to stereo, taking listeners from past to present. The Korg MOSS analog synthesizer gives the track some additional warmth, while vocal samples (including from President Lyndon B. Johnson’s 1964 Civil Rights address) add to the historical references.
Fans of ambient electronica or just interested in unique storytelling will find Karlenko’s latest release worthy of a thoughtful listen. Even for listeners just looking to experience something new, this release will be a standout due to its sincerity. It’s obvious and admirable that Karlenko is using his talent and music to start, or continue, a conversation.
