Sometimes, the work of musicians and artists can take years to develop fully before it becomes a real piece. While some artists can simply churn out constant material in attempts to break through, the best songs often take a long period of time to materialize. But when the results are as astounding as “Tides of the Bloom,” the latest single from German-Italian composer Julian Petrin, no wait is too long. First performed in 1990 as accompaniment to Frank Wedekind’s play, Spring Awakening, the song is updated with modern sounds, synths and technology to enhance its overall cinematic experience.

Although there are more modern elements in the song (given that it has been developed over the course of three decades), Petrin attempts and succeeds at capturing the original spirit of the song, a work to inspire self-determination and control of one’s own life, relating to similar issues in Spring Awakening. Petrin wears his influences on his sleeve, as it reaches the same heights as some of the great electronic composers of all time, such as Jean-Michel Jarre and Ryuichi Sakamoto. This is a new kind of electronic music: ambient but meant to be listened to fully, with intent. “Tides of the Bloom” clearly shows that Julian Petrin is one of the most underrated composers working in ambient electronica today.
