Altheya: The Dragon Empire | Main Them
Jolene Khor, a composer based in London, is showcasing her work, Altheya: The Dragon Empire | Main Theme. The three-minute track is an orchestral composition created for the High Rollers DnD campaign and drew inspiration from the music of Joe Hisaishi, known for his Studio Ghibli scores, as well as John Powell’s compositions for How to Train Your Dragon. With a focus on grand orchestration, the piece is bound to subconsciously evoke a sense of adventure.
Recorded with the Budapest Scoring Orchestra and mixed by Mina Samy, the track employs a range of instruments, including strings, brass, and woodwinds. The recording session was noted for its efficiency, with musicians sight-reading the score and completing intricate sections within a few takes. The composition evolves dynamically throughout its duration, utilizing varied instrumentation that is bound to maintain listener engagement. The music’s structure includes distinctive motifs, such as a rhythmic passage in the bridge that references themes from a previous High Rollers campaign, adding continuity within the broader body of work.
Notably, the piece premiered during episodes of the High Rollers DnD campaign on many platforms such as Twitch and YouTube and was later performed live at the Adelphi Theatre during the High Rollers Live Show in September. Overall, Khor’s work demonstrates a strong integration of narrative and musical elements, showcasing her understanding of orchestral composition and its application in fantasy storytelling.
