On Rotation: "GREY" by JEUNE

Jeune, an emerging indie pop group comprising members Layla, Matt, Michael, and Carlos, released their latest single, Grey. Released as a preview of their forthcoming album, the track represents an evolution in the group’s sound, leaning into an 80s/90s synth-pop aesthetic inspired by artists like The Beaches, boygenius, and Clairo. Recorded at Burnt House Records in Lubbock, Texas, Grey emerges as an exploration of identity.

Lyrically, Grey touches on themes of self-perception and emotional alienation. Opening with the lines, “Picking my brain / Till I can't think about this anymore,” the song sets a tone of emotional exhaustion, capturing the turmoil of someone caught between self-reliance and the desire for connection. The protagonist grapples with their role as “the friend who does for everybody else,” as the refrain states, “You can all make fun of me / I'm outside in my head / On the inside what if I'm dead?” encapsulates feelings of disconnection. The repetition of “On the inside what if I'm dead” underscores a deep anxiety, but then is juxtaposed with the upbeat synth-driven instrumentation. Furthermore, the chorus, “You look miserable tonight / Do you feel alright,” shifts the focus outward, suggesting an interplay between personal struggles and empathy for others. Perhaps the lyrics' ambiguity invites multiple interpretations.

Notably, Jeune’s approach to songwriting embraces a freestyle ethos. Afterall, the band said that the line “There are no rules!” has become a mantra for the group, shaping the open nature of their music. The production of Grey features lush synth layers, glowing guitar lines, and a driving rhythm section. Recorded alongside their album at Burnt House Records, the track showcases Jeune’s dedication to making music that features bold sonic choices.

All in all, Grey stands out as a pivotal release for Jeune, blending personal lyricism with energetic pop arrangements. Performed recently in full during their debut album showcase, Jeune’s music continues to resonate with audiences, as they keep adding depth to their indie pop sound.
