The sassy, competitive nature of “Better Guy” provides a truly light and bubbly atmosphere needed in much of this year’s music. A duet between Irish producer and singer Cian O’Donoghue and Irish pop singer Ivon Roberts, “Better Guy” is a funk and R&B jam influenced by pop stalwarts such as Ariana Grande and Ed Sheeran. As fans of each other’s work since a session in 2020, the chemistry between the two is unforced and unforgettable, fitting perfectly into a song about a “sleek, tongue-in-cheek take on 2 friends at a bar competing over a girl, when really they’re more interested in one-upping each other.”
This meshing of styles provides an even greater degree of contrast and connection between the two singers, as O’Donoghue provides a warm, almost country-esque baritone as a foil to Roberts’ tenor pop theatrics. As a highly original idea providing a fun take on “courting culture”, “Better Guy” is a unique exercise in pop duet magic.
