GWYN - I Beat U 2 It
"Upbeat in sound but heavy in subtext, the song blends bright acoustic guitars, energetic drum beats, and a polished vocal performance that feels lifted straight from the Billboard charts"

On Rotation: GWYN "I Beat U 2 It"
Filmmaker Gavin Michael Booth showes his creativity through the fictional pop artist GWYN’s story and lastest/final release. As it goes, just before her breakthrough album was set to release, the rising pop star suddenly passed away. As part of his creative project, the audience must piece together the story in Dreamcrusher, a murder mystery series. Before sher death, she left behind her final single, “I Beat U 2 I,” which was written and produced by Bleu and Brooke Tomlinson.
Sonically, “I Beat U 2 It” is pure early 2010s pop as it immediately gives the same energy that launched the careers of teen stars like Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, and Miranda Cosgrove. There is the perfect combo of acoustic guitar riffs, drums, and a Disney inspired radio-ready production. Like all of the best pop artists from this time, GWYN’s vocal performance is clear and polished. At first listen, the song is for the girlies as it is perfectly catchy and danceable. However, as this is part of a greater project, listen closely and you might just find clues.
Perhaps forthtelling or perhaps just part of the genre, the lyrics tell the story of empowerment and emotional exhaustion. For example, the chorus sings, “Cause if all my dreams come true, there'll be nothing left to do / I bet even birds get tired of the view / you can take what I have left to lose, no matter what you do / I've been through it / I beat you to it.” Notably, the line about birds getting tired of the view is subtle yet also poetically sharp, sharing the message that even beauty can feel empty over time. The closing line in the chorus is unsurprisingly, “I beat you to it” which sounds more like an upbeat mic drop. However, as this is a greater project and her death in the backdrop, it might take on a darker meaning.
“I Beat U 2 It” is a fun track as a single creative project, but as part of a bigger story the song is a clue, a goodbye, and perhaps even a cry for help. Gavin Michael Booth showcases his ability to blend film, music, and mysterious storytelling into one with this track to create a one of a kind project.
