We interviewed Gina Tanzer on the occasion of the release of her latest single "EULOGY".
Hi Gina. Welcome to AFX. Who or what are some of your greatest influences and how have they inspired the music you create?
I love Jon Bellion and Elio, the ear candy and electronic elements in their music gets me every time. Imagine dragons I listen to a lot, I enjoy their productions and choices for percussion. Griff was a massive influence which lead to me becoming a bedroom producer in the first place. For lyrics I would say Maisie Peters, Taylor Swift but also Jon Bellion again. There is this one line in his song “Guillotine” that goes “there’s bones in my closet but you hang stuff anyway” gives me goosebumps each time. They have all inspired these different parts to creating a song and bringing my stories to life through music.
How do you come up with ideas for new songs?
I like to write what I know but I also quite enjoy creating a fictional character (maybe inspired by conversations with friends, movies or books) and I would write a story from their point of view. Almost like continuing the story.
Do any of your songs based on personal experiences? If so, can you tell me about one that’s particularly special to you?
Yes, many on the release plan for next year. My latest song Eulogy has hints of past relationship stories mixed in with some extra dramatics (because who doesn't love a little bit of spice). It describes the relationship of two lovers and tells a story of a fallen love, channeling the concept of Lucifer the fallen angel. But it’s not exactly the sad fallen love story you would imagine, no it embraces the complexity of relationships where you may know it's not the right thing at the time but eventually you get to a point where you say 'screw it, I am all in, we are both going to hell and but don't worry I will write your eulogy'. Almost this type of self sabotaging love story.
What are some of the challenges you face as an artist?
I work full time at an investment bank - I like to call myself a "hybrid human" or "corporate creative" and so my challenge as an artist I would say is really trying to find balance and push against the boundaries/corporate norms of my day to day. I love to embrace these paradoxes and channel it into my music.
What has been the best performance of your career so far?
Singing at the World Championships of Performing Arts in Los Angeles was definitely a massive highlight, but actually more recently I would say the release party for my first single “I Love a Man in Puka Shells” - everyone in the crowd was singing back the lyrics of the song and it was just all around good vibes the whole evening.
If you could collaborate with any artist in the world, who would you choose?
Jon Bellion
Are you working on any new music or planning anything exciting that we can look forward to?
Yes, following on from my 2 singles released this year, I will release my third single early next year and an EP shortly after.
