On Rotation: dvdv "STARVVING" (Album)
Artist dvdv and producer Poly Armour released their latest album, STARVVING, which was funded by Initiative Musik gGmbH with additional support from Musikfonds e.V. The album is immersive, hypnotic, and focuses on survival, connection, and escapism. Across its 14 tracks, dvdv's soaring vocals complemented Poly Armour’s industrial production, making an album that is electronic in genre but also somehow oddly meditative.
The album is best described by focusing on a few tracks that paint the picture. To start, the song “U Shut The Door” is featured towards the beginning of the album and kicks off with an almost spooky intro. However, high-energy beats are introduced quickly, creating an energetic rhythm that pairs perfectly with off-putting vocal soars. dvdv's vocals on this track could be featured in an opera, yet it carries a unique electronic twist that gives it an eerie quality. The contrast between the intense beats and the dramatic vocals adds tension, making it hard for the listener to look away.
Another standout track is “Now Belong,” which introduces sound effects that sound almost video game-like, blurring the lines of virtuality. The experimental production combined with dvdv’s more feminine vocal sounds keeps the theme of unease, but still adding something different. The song feels like navigating a dark, futuristic environment that is interesting, but also very unsettling. The layered sounds and unnerving vocal textures contribute to that unique sense of displacement.
Lastly, “U See” shines with its minimalistic production and distressing energy. dvdv’s voice drifts through the track, floating above subtle but sharp electronic beats. The track has a chilling vibe and it’s a soft exploration of perception, with a melody that feels fragile, yet powerful.
While this duo have worked together before, STARVVING is their most complete work yet.
It’s safe to say dvdv and Poly Armour have created an album that exists on its own and one that fully embraces electronic experimentation. Fans of artists like Arca, FKA twigs, or Oneohtrix Point Never will love the album’s blend of production and eccentric themes. With such a strong artistic drive, it’s easy to imagine dvdv’s future projects pushing even further into multimedia territory. Whether through live performances, new collaborations, or maybe even interactive experiences, STARVVING proves that dvdv is an artist with a bright future ahead.
