On Rotation: DRYADIC "RAINBOW FAMILY"

Dryadic, a rising indie folk group led by Zora McDonald, released their latest single, “Rainbow Family,” a relaxing lullaby-inspired track that can be best described as a gentle celebration of chosen families that are often found within the LGBTQ+ community.

As the title might suggest, the lyrics in “Rainbow Family” focus on seeking connection within the community. While it’s overall an optimistic song, there are poetry-laced lyrics that showcase the loneliness that people within the LGBTQ+ community might feel at times. For example, McDonald sings, "My longing heart is battered, from the tears that tear its tattered, surely now that matters, is how I plan to move on.” Written during the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns, McDonalds further focuses on the importance of community with the line "Pray that in the morning I'll feel less alone.” Despite some of these undertones, the song ultimately is one that will surely bring hope with its calming melodies and upbeat vocals.

Afterall, “Rainbow Family” unfolds like a lullaby, starting with a calming acoustic backing and is later accompanied by soft guitar strums, fiddle lines, and calming singing. Dryadic’s sound might draw comparisons to artists like Fleet Foxes and First Aid Kit, with an earthy authenticity that clearly shows their folk roots. The ethereal "do do dos" toward the end of the chorus bring a welcomed optimism that lingers throughout the track making it the perfect song for pride anytime of the year.

No matter what type of music you’re into, “Rainbow Family” is sure to warm your heart and make you reflect on your own chosen family. If you’re already planning your playlist for Pride Month in June, don’t forget to add Dryadic’s latest track as it serves as a welcomed reminder that we are never truly alone - after all rainbows only appear after a storm, right?
