On Rotation: Consequential  "NOT THE TYPE"

Consequential, an independent producer based in Bury St. Edmunds released his latest track “Not The Type” last month. Having been in the music industry for over 20 years and creating in different genres, Consequential has made a reputation for himself for his bass music with a unique flair. His newest release has some more commercial appeal, but still keeps his introspective and atmospheric qualities.

In true low-fi fashion, the track blends various chill drum and bass rhythms with a muffled vocal production. From the start, “Not The Type” creates a reflective vibe with the track’s airy synths, vintage beats, and bird song samples that give it more of an organic feel. While a bit more polished than some of Consequential’s past work, it still carries that unfiltered edge found in low-fi tracks. This balance of smooth production with minimalist and repetitive arrangements makes "Not The Type" a compelling listen from the first verse to the last.

Likewise, the song’s lyrics follow a repetitive but revealing pattern, centering around the message of “I’m not the type of guy…” before going into deeper reflection with the lyrics “I’m more like…” As mentioned, the muffled vocal effects make the lyrics a bit challenging to fully understand, but it also makes the message feel almost like passing thoughts, reinforcing the introspective nature. Rather than making bold statements, “Not The Type” explores identity by defining what the artist isn’t and leaves space for interpresentation.

All in all, Consequential years in the music industry paid off with his latest release. Fans of artists like Burial, LSB, or Calibre will find comfort in the track’s blend of a melancholic narrative and rolling beats. With more releases on the horizon, Consequential is certainly the type to keep us waiting for more.
