With massive hooks and saxophone straight from the 80s, Blueprint Tokyo’s latest single, “Take My Breath,” is a pop rock powerhouse that leaves listeners stunned with its free-flowing and exhilarating atmosphere. A collaboration between Oklahoma City artists Kevin Dawson and Andrew Hale, the group’s newest track is filled to the brim with emotion about how relationships change as one matures, and how one looks back on the course of a relationship with a level-headedness and sobriety that only appears with years of experience and ups and downs. The lyrics reflect this sentiment; the song reaches a breaking point with the line “the oldest hearts are still young,” highlighting the feeling that the longest lasting relationships still carry the spark to go through the ups and downs once again.

While the instrumental already features a stellar display of musicianship, the group felt that the song was taken to the next level through the addition of a saxophone, which, according to them, added a “texture that you just don’t hear as much anymore.” And the saxophone doesn’t exactly play it straight either. When that breaking point in the song does occur, the saxophone provides a much-needed bit of chaos in the song that provides a nervous foil to the overwhelming optimism in the song. The vocals are also dominated with a roughness and edge that only further highlights how “Take My Breath” is one of the most mature takes on love in pop rock this year. With plans to go on the road and release even more music next year, plan to see Blueprint Tokyo if they stop in your town.
