AUNCE "BEEP BEEP"
AUNCE, the stage name for Anna Edith Daly Edgington, is redefining the boundaries and creating her own sound with her latest release, Beep Beep. Already known for her unique edge and experimental production, AUNCE uses her latest release to challenge societal norms and explore personal and universal themes. With Beep Beep, she sheds light on the experience of self-objectification and self-sexualization in the digital age.
Sonically, Beep Beep blends emotion with avant-garde production. The track opens with hauntingly layered vocals, creating an almost eerie intimacy. This quickly gives way to off-kilter percussion and distorted electronic textures, which purposely evokes a feeling of unease that mirrors the song’s heavy topics. AUNCE’s knack for weaving choral stacks, vocal rhythms, and unconventional beats is all showcased throughout the three-minute track. Echoing the dark pop edge of artists like Billie Eilish while maintaining her own darker sound, the track’s unpredictable sounds are bound to keep listeners engaged.
Meanwhile, the lyrics of Beep Beep are introspective, asking questions about the cost of putting one’s self-worth in line with online validation. While at times the lyrics might be hard to understand with the grand production, it’s important that listeners pay close attention to understand the song’s message. Lines like “how sad would it be to live half a life in this body for you?” shed light on the emotional toll of self-objectification, presenting a critique that is personal, yet ever growing more common. Furthermore, AUNCE notes that the song doesn’t shy away from the contradictions of "body positivity," examining how empowerment narratives can sometimes reinforce limiting ideals.
Overall, Beep Beep serves as a powerful introduction to AUNCE’s forthcoming EP, The Evergreen Collection. Having earned her PhD in Music Production and a history of multidisciplinary collaborations, Daly Edgington continues to explore her creative practice, offering a personal combination of intellect and instinct.
