On Rotation: ATTACK OF THE SOUND "WAKE UP CALL"
Attack The Sound, a Chicago-based music group, has released their most vulnerable track yet in “Wake Up Call.” Led by frontman and Army veteran Davo Sounds and known for what they describe as a Chi-pop sound, a blend of indie R&B, pop, gospel, rock, hip hop, and jazz, “Wake Up Call” explores the silent battles of depression as well as the parallel search for hope.
Starting the song off strong, the track opens with the heavy lyrics of, "I'm staring down the barrel of a Colt 45 / trying to figure out / what my life is about / trying to figure it out," placing the listener right there with the story. Throughout the song, Attack The Sound uses each line to paint the picture of feeling of trying to find meaning in a bout of depression. The repeated chorus plea, "You could save me with a wake up call,” sounds urgent, making the song sound also like a cry for empathy.
Production wise, “Wake Up Call” goes off of the group's already signature layered, textured production style. The backing is moody, using restrained beats, soulful melodies, and subtle shifts that go hand in hand with the lyrics. There’s also a bit of a vintage flare behind every note, adding to the personal experience.
All in all, “Wake Up Call,” is a great reminder that music can be used as an artform to express even the darkest of time. While Attack The Sound has already built a solid reputation in Chicago, this latest release further shows that the group is one of the most authentic coming out of the windy city today.
