As the month of December begins its second half, and the holidays begin to creep closer and closer, mellow, beautiful songs always seem to sound best during this often reflective and joyous time. With an intimate atmosphere that feels like a fusing of a quiet standard and a folky love song, the quiet duet “Home” by Atlin Morgan and Daniel Sinclair, two musicians from the Vancouver area, is a spirited and often passionate love ballad that brings one almost to tears due to the combination of great musicianship and stellar performances from the two singers. Morgan’s voice feels very much like an ode to all of the music that she grew up on, as traces of jazz legends like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday shine through in her delivery, while Sinclair’s voice seems like the perfect counterpoint: a warm, bassy foil to the flashy strength of Morgan.

Combined, these two recall the close duets of artists like She and Him, with an intimacy and presence in each other’s performances that makes the song’s lyrics about love and finding security in one’s partner feel less like a song and more like a conversation between two people genuinely in love with each other. Morgan hopes the song will “make its way into the catalog of beloved and timeless duets.” One listen is enough to prove that it ultimately will.
