On Rotation: ARTIC WAVE - PURE AND OPEN

Arctic Wave, Austin’s unique genre-blending group, released their latest single, “Pure and Open.” The release can best be described as a pop reggae combo song that perfectly encapsulates summer vibes. Led by songwriter and frontman C.L. Turner, “Pure and Open” feels like an optimistic beach track focused on finding the right person.

Sonically, the track is a perfect example of modern pop reggae done right. Already known for their unique sound that spans genres from indie rock to cinematic electronica, the band here leans into the island breeze sounds. A light guitar backing carries the rhythm alongside a rolling bassline, while percussion and keys give that added beat to the track. Likewise, the production stays light, but beneath the surface, there is obviously a lot of detail with every instrument sounding perfectly placed. There’s an obvious splash of Jack Johnson, SOJA, and the even the feel good early Maroon 5, but the final track can only be described as Arctic Wave.

Lyrically, “Pure and Open” uses its lyrics to focus on finding a love that doesn’t require fixing. The chorus might just be deceptively simple in its clarity as it starts: “I don't need another mountain to climb/ I don't need a renovation project / just the one thing I want to find / is a love that's honest – that's my object.” It’s an ode to the all too common “fixers,” or the people who think that being a therapist, sounding board, coach to their partner is what love is all about. In this realization, Turner delivers these lyrics with quiet confidence, pairing this knowing with hope: “There’s gotta be someone out there for me / with a heart that’s pure – a heart that’s open.” It’s something that is spoken about in self-help books, but doesn’t get written about in catchy and uplifting songs all that often.

All in all, “Pure and Open” is perfect for fans of Michael Franti, Ziggy Marley, Trevor Hall, or Ben Harper. What makes it stand out is its natural positive vibes and lyrical simplicity. Whether going for a walk, a sunset drive, or just looking for a great uplifting track, this song manages to be heartfelt while also sounding pure and open indeed.
