ANNIE ON THE RUN - INTERVIEW
Hi Annie. Welcome to AFX. What are a few words that would best describe you and your musical world?
Themes of revenge, empowerment and survival, queer love and mental health with dreamy, ethereal vocals mixed with electronic beats, all wrapped up in a rich, dark, cinematic atmosphere. It's electro synth pop, but not as we know it.
Do you write with a specific audience in mind?
I do write with a queer lens and for a queer audience. Although I don't often use pronouns in my songs, it's always about a woman unless I'm talking about ancient traumatic history.
What would you say is your greatest strength as a singer/musician?
I can do dark baddy and sad girl vibes really well. Some times I don't always want to but it seems to come most naturally to me. I seem to excel at producing haunting bass lines that creep with my songs. I've been very maximalist with my production for this release period but I intend to flip that on its head in the future.
What's the best advice you've ever received about pursuing a career in music?
Follow the dopamine when it comes to song writing. You'll get your best work if you're super engaged with what you're writing or producing. I've also come to discover some of my own advice I tell myself - to enjoy the process and not put too much pressure on it. We should enjoy making music and songs. Equally, I've told this to myself about content creation to promote music, which I find really hard. I have ADHD and it creates this over-thinking ritual in my head which can affect my content on TikTok and Instagram. I tried working on relaxing during content sessions, but that didn't work. So now I'm trying to only do it if I'm having fun, because that's when I'm the real most authentic me, and that's the person I want my listeners to get to know.
Tell us something about your professional journey so far? Is there anything you’d like to say to your fans?
I'm really excited to release everything I've been working on for the past 18 months. It's been such a journey becoming my own producer and learning everything I can to be able to bring these sounds to other people. I'm a huge fan of championing LGBTQIA+ artists and female and non-binary producers, and this group seems largely invisible to everyone outside the community. Change comes from tiny movement as well as big movement, so the only way to change the industry, is if we're in the industry. I think Chappell Roan is making huge waves in this area. I've been a fan of hers since 2019 and it's been incredible watching her queer awakening and leap to the top by being her authentic self. I feel so honoured to have her as lesbian representation and I am so glad the younger generation now have her to look up to.
What are your lifelong dreams?
Like with many indie artists, I just want to be able to make this a full-time career, or at least change some lives the way my favourite artists have changed mine.
Are you working on any new music or planning anything exciting that we can look forward to?
I am releasing a new single every month for the next 6 months at least. My new single "Survivors' Club" (released on October 25th) is a song based on a real-life event when the ex of my ex offered me support in recovering from a covert abuser. I felt like I was in a Survivors' Club.
