Live performances can capture an artist at the height of their powers. Drawing on the intimate atmosphere and small crowd around them, singers can reach untapped potential and stunning crescendos as they skillfully interpret their own work or inventively re-interpret the work of others. There may be no better example of this than in performances where, in the case of the debut single from ALIA, “I’m Getting Off,” the vocalist is backed by only a single instrument. Building on a quiet and emotive guitar part played by producer and writer Steven Young, ALIA’s deep and growling vocals, like a fusion of Amy Winehouse and Rag ‘n’ Bone Man, carry the listener through a 7 minute performance filled with passion and ferocity.

Whereas other vocalists who want to convey inspiration and perseverance in a song often use large, booming productions, ALIA uses the exact opposite, preferring to let Young’s lyrics about unity and recognizing that one is not alone when facing all the troubles stand tall and proud, the chilling reverb making it less a song and more a genuine call to the world to unify and carry on. Proving that minimalism can mean maximum results, ALIA’s debut is a chilling, stunning entrance onto the pop scene.
