On Rotation: ALAN DREEZER "APART"

Alan Dreezer, an indie Eastbourne-based singer-songwriter, released his latest single “Apart” which showcases a deeper and more atmospheric side of his artistry. The track is also the fifth release from his upcoming album Nothing Changes If Nothing Changes. Known for his more polished, radio-ready sound that is a unique blend of pop and soul, Dreezer’s latest release is a more introspective sound, which was inspired by the likes of RYX and James Blake.

Lyrically, “Apart” focused on the heavy emotions that come with even the most amicable of breakups. These are the tipe of breakups where there is still love, but it just wasn’t meant to be. In the chorus, Dreezer makes this clear singing:

“Apart, Is better for me and for you
A new start
Now we can be different people
Oh my heart
Could easily feel like it’s breaking
If I start
To believe we are Apart"

The lyrics, along with others, focus on the often unspoken emotional hesitation of letting go of something that you is good, but not right. It’s vulnerable and also uniquely mature.

Production-wise, “Apart” is really focused on minimalism and creating an emotional mood in just four minutes. Soft piano, very quiet electronic textures, and thoughtful layers create a heavier and somber sound. Notably, Dreezer’s simple, yet controlled, voice carries the weight of the song with a sense of emotional clarity. This will be a familiar vibe for fans of ambient pop and downtempo soul.

With “Apart,” embraces change - both in his sound, lyrics, and life. It’s a step away from the upbeat, catchy singles that he used to release, but it also shows that honesty can be just as memorable. As he continues to release music with this moodier sound ahead of his full album release, “Apart,” really sets him apart from the artistry he once embodied.
