On Rotation: a little place called Aspen - BACK FROM THE DEAD

A little place called Aspen, which is actually a Toronto-based alt-pop collective, realed their debut single, “Back from the Dead,” a track that mixes eerie lyrics and storytelling with a classic indie-pop energy. Inspired by Stephen King’s “Home Delivery”, the song delivers a unique twist on love, loss, and the supernatural, blending narrative songwriting with a danceable beat.

Production wise, “Back from the Dead” does commercially well with its indie-pop foundation, featuring synths, a clean percussion, and classic guitar lines. The haunting, cinematic undertones are contrasted with the song’s upbeat energy and the production, which was completed internally by the band members, maintains a radio-ready sheen. Mixed by Dan Brodbeck and mastered by Montano Mastering, the final sound is dynamic, sounding like other indie pop icons such as LANY, Valley, and The Band CAMINO.

Lyrically, the song stands out for its unique approach, featuring zombie apocalypse imagery into its lyrics and themes of undying love and dread. For example, the opening lyrics, "My love was dead in the sea, but it came crawling back to me" perfectly kick off the track as they showcase the song’s ghostly undertones. Meanwhile, the chorus, “Reanimated, we’re coming back again,” serves as both a literal reference to the undead and a metaphor for the persistence of love (or the inability to let go). The apocalyptic lyrics add a sense of urgency and finality, making the song feel more cinematic than its production might initially give off. .

All in all, if you’re looking for a track to bring you back, perhaps it’s worth listening to “Back from the Dead” as it perfectly mixes dark lyricism with a light and upbeat sound. Fans of Bad Suns, joan, and Fly By Midnight will recognize its nostalgic yet polished sound. With their debut single, a little place called Aspen proves they’re ready to find a big place in the growing indie-pop scene.
